Dear Friends of the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation,
As you may know, all Oregon school districts are currently working toward submitting their first Student Investment Account (SIA) application, required by the state to access SIA grant funds from the state for the 2020-2021 school year and beyond. The application submission window is March 2 – April 15, 2020. While arts education is not a primary funding area for the Miller Foundation, we believe that every child should have access to a well-rounded education that includes the arts and therefore do provide arts education support in limited ways.
We know that many arts organizations that we support provide arts access and education to our state’s young people. For that reason, we are writing now because we want to share some examples of how arts education can help meet the SIA goals of closing opportunity gaps and supporting students mental and emotional health. We hope you will take a few minutes to review two documents. The first is a letter, signed by arts organizations and funders across the state, that speaks to the impact of arts education and the alignment with the Student Investment Account goals. The second document is a sampling of how schools and nonprofit partners can implement arts education.
We appreciate you taking the time to review this information. Our belief is that the better each of us understands the needs and opportunities for our state’s young people, the more success we can realize in this exciting new era for education in Oregon.
Sincerely,
Martha Richards
Executive Director
